Labour Party crisis deepens as Abure-led faction disowns caretaker chairman

The Labour Party has been plunged into further crisis as the Julius Abure-led faction disowned the newly appointed caretaker chairman, Nenadi Usman.

This development comes after a Court of Appeal judgement affirming Abure as national chairman, sparking controversy within the party.

The Abure-led faction described Nenadi Usman’s appointment as “illegal and unconstitutional.” In a statement signed by the national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the faction reiterated that Abure remains the legitimate national chairman.

“The use of the Labour Party name to propagate such dangerous and unfounded claims is not only a threat to national security but also a grave disservice to the millions of party members who genuinely seek positive change through legitimate means,” the statement added.

The crisis within the Labour Party has raised concerns among political stakeholders, with many calling for a resolution to the leadership tussle.

Recall that Senator Usman was declared as the chairman of a 29-member national caretaker committee of the Labour Party (LP).

The announcement was made by the 2023 Presidential candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi.
