Kwara shuts two Ilorin schools following student unrest

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Government High School and Government Day Secondary School, both located in Adeta, Ilorin, after a series of student-led disturbances.

The decision follows violent confrontations among students, disruption of academic sessions, and destruction of property within the two institutions.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, said the action was necessary to restore calm and safeguard lives and infrastructure.

He explained that only students currently writing the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE) and their supervising teachers would be allowed access to school premises for the duration of the examinations.

Dr Olohungbebe also instructed that all SSSCE candidates must wear their school identification cards to be granted entry to the school compound.

He called on parents and guardians to ensure that their children remain at home during the period of closure. He warned that any student found contravening the directive would be taken into custody by security personnel.

The state government reaffirmed its determination to uphold discipline and ensure the safety of pupils and staff in all public schools across Kwara.
