KEDCO, others embark on Solar projects in Jigawa

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and two other companies are to embark on 1MWp interconnected solar mini-grid projects in eight communities of Jigawa State.

A statement issued by the company’s Head, Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani in Kano on Monday,  said the local communities would include Hadejia, Gumel, Kafin Hausa, Ringim, Dutse and Kazaure.

The partnering companies include a Chinese consortium, Weisky, and Bagaja Renewable.

“KEDCO has issued an Invitation to Developers Furthering, through a Request for proposal to welcome developers interested in embedded and mini-grid projects across the DISCO franchise area,”’ he said.

According to him, the project is in line with the company’s strategic partnership with the Jigawa State Government.

Sani further said that KEDCO had already planned other similar Mini-Grid Projects in Katsina’s Barhim Estate and a significant 2.5MWp project in the Kura/Karfi rice milling cluster in Kano.

“These projects are expected to have a transformative impact on local economies and livelihood through provision of stable and clean energy,” the spokesperson said.

He added that the projects were set to provide energy in those communities by offering reliable and sustainable electricity.

The statement however, reported the company’s Managing Director, Abubakar Yusuf,  expressing confidence in the initiatives.

Yusuf said the partnership project was a significant achievement in renewable energy  and economic empowerment in northern Nigeria.

“We are anticipating the positive outcomes from these projects on the communities we are serving,” he said.

Sani, however, reiterated the company’s commitment to provide reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.

“Through innovative solutions and partnerships, KEDCO will lead the way in renewable energy adoption and sustainable development in Nigeria,” he said.
