Jubilation as NYSC begins N77,000 payment to corps members
There was widespread jubilation among National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members as the Federal Government has officially commenced the long-awaited payment of N77,000 monthly allowance, a move that has brought relief to thousands of corps members across Nigeria.
The increase, which was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in September 2024, had left many corps members eagerly awaiting the promised payments.
After a prolonged delay, the payments have now begun, sparking celebrations from the youth service participants.
The N77,000 allowance, a significant jump from the previous N33,000 introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Despite the promise made months ago, delays in the implementation of the new allowance had caused growing frustration among corps members, many of whom had been left with no choice but to make do with the older, less substantial payment.
A corps member from Kwara State, who identified himself as Peter, confirmed the commencement of payments, noting that while some had already received the new allowance, others were still anxiously waiting.
“The payment is finally here, and it’s a huge relief,” Peter said. “It’s been a long time coming, and I’m just glad it’s happening now.”
On social media, reactions to the development have been widespread, with many Nigerians sharing their excitement about the increased allowance.
Twitter user @Chika_Amadi posted: “NYSC has finally started paying the N77k! What a relief! Hopefully, the backlog of payments gets sorted soon too!”
Another user, @Samuel_Tayo, who had been vocal in expressing disappointment over the delays, tweeted: “They’ve finally done it! N77k is now in our accounts. I’m happy but it’s about time, honestly.”
Meanwhile, @Micheal_Olufemi, another excited corps member, tweeted: “NYSC finally paying us what we deserve! Let the celebrations begin #CorpsMemberLife #77k” expressing joy at the news.
The payment increase aligns with recent adjustments in Nigeria’s minimum wage, responding to demands from labor unions for higher wages to counter inflation and the rising cost of living.
The N77,000 monthly allowance is expected to ease the financial burden on corps members as they serve the nation in various parts of the country.
