The Joint Security Force in Anambra State said it effectively dismantled insurgent activity that had been plaguing various parts of Anambra state in a significant achievement on Friday, rescuing kidnapped Catholic priest and three others.
The operation, led by the Police’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Aguata, in collaboration with the military and paramilitary units, received crucial support from the Police Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu. Their combined efforts culminated in a raid on the insurgents’ stronghold located in Ogbunka, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the operation resulted in the successful rescue of three individuals who had been abducted, including a Reverend Father. Fortunately, all rescued hostages emerged from the operation unharmed.
DSP Ikenga further disclosed that three suspects were apprehended during the operation, and the security forces recovered nine vehicles that had been seized at gunpoint. Additionally, three Pump Action guns were confiscated from the insurgents’ hideout.
He elaborated, “In addition to these recoveries, stolen camouflage uniforms, a Biafra flag, numerous mobile handsets, flash drives, and SIM cards were found at the scene, which will greatly assist in conducting thorough investigations and facilitating prosecutions.”
The gang responsible for a series of abductions in Orumba North and South, as well as parts of Aguata Local Government Areas, particularly in recent times, was identified as the prime target of the operation. DSP Ikenga pointed out that all the abducted victims had fallen prey to the suspects earlier this month.
He stated, “The successful raid on the insurgents’ camp was the result of months of diligent and painstaking intelligence gathering and investigation, which ultimately unveiled the criminals’ concealed location.”
Commending the service personnel and vigilant members involved for their professionalism, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, who ordered and coordinated the operation, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost during the operation.
