The Jigawa State Government has issued a firm warning against the diversion or illegal sale of agricultural inputs allocated for its 2025 dry season rice farming initiative, stating that anyone found guilty will face the full consequences of the law.
Governor Malam Umar Namadi made this statement on Saturday during the official launch of the programme at Jura village in Auyo Local Government Area, underscoring the government’s zero-tolerance approach to sabotaging efforts aimed at enhancing food security and promoting rural prosperity.
The governor announced that more than 58,500 farmers across the state’s 27 local government areas will benefit from subsidised farm inputs, including high-quality seed varieties, fertilisers, irrigation support, and other essential resources.
“We will not stand for the diversion or sale of agricultural inputs intended for our farmers. This programme is far too important to be undermined by personal interests. Anyone found guilty of such actions will face severe consequences,” Namadi declared.
He revealed that the programme is a cornerstone of the state’s agricultural transformation plan, which aims to produce 3.6 million metric tonnes of rice annually.
“We have set an ambitious goal of producing 3.6 million metric tonnes of rice each year, and I am confident that, with the dedication of our farmers, committed partners, and other stakeholders, this target will be met,” he said.
The governor explained that more than 130,000 hectares of land will be cultivated using advanced farming techniques, including mechanisation, fertilisation, weed control, and irrigation.
He further added that the administration is focused on comprehensive value chain development, going beyond just increasing yield.
“This initiative is not only about boosting output but about achieving full transformation. Through the Rice Value Chain Development project, we will introduce complete mechanisation, establish processing hubs, and improve access to both local and global markets,” Namadi said.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming Jigawa into Nigeria’s leading rice producer and establishing it as a model for agribusiness-driven rural development.
“By working together, we will build a stronger, more self-sufficient Jigawa, driven by agricultural growth and sustainable community development,” the governor concluded.
