Arsenal hero, Jack Wilshere, has urged the English Football Association to do all they can to appoint Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe as Gareth Southgate’s replacement should the 52-year-old step down as Three Lions manager.
Wilshere believes Howe is the best manager to take over from Southgate in the near future.
Southgate is currently considering his future with the Three Lions after their 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final 2-1 defeat to France last weekend.
His current contract with England will expire in 2024.
“If Gareth Southgate does leave the England job, I would love the FA to try and get Eddie Howe,” Wilshere told the Sun.
“I know how good Eddie is from my time at Bournemouth, but people wondered whether he could make that step up to a bigger club.
“Well, now he has shown at Newcastle how skilled he is at developing players and he is turning them into title challengers.”
