JAC suspends strike in Oyo State tertiary institutions

The unions representing tertiary institutions in Oyo State have decided to suspend their indefinite strike, allowing for the execution of agreements reached with the state government.

Dr Kola Lawal, Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions, made the announcement in a resolution shared with the press in Ibadan on Thursday.

According to Lawal, the decision followed a constructive meeting held on Tuesday between the Rectors and Provosts of the state’s tertiary institutions, facilitated by Platinum Consultants.

He stated that key agreements were made to address the union’s demands.

“The meeting was convened to discuss the ongoing indefinite strike declared by JAC, with a primary focus on ensuring the full implementation of the new minimum wage and the overdue salary adjustments of 25 per cent for some employees and 35 per cent for others in the state’s higher institutions.

“Following extensive deliberations and negotiations, the following agreements were collectively reached:

“That the management of tertiary institutions in Oyo State is fully committed to implementing the new minimum wage.

“This commitment includes applying the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary adjustments, effective from the salary payment of January and February 2025.

“In addition, the outstanding arrears from the minimum wage adjustments will be settled, and the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases covering January to December 2024 will be disbursed in instalments throughout 2025.

“This phased payment approach is designed to balance financial sustainability with the institutions’ obligation to their staff,” Lawal stated.

He further noted that, in view of the agreements reached and the intervention of key stakeholders across the state, JAC had resolved to immediately suspend the industrial action.

Lawal emphasised that the suspension was based on the expectation that all agreements would be strictly adhered to.

He warned that any failure to implement the resolutions would result in the automatic resumption of the strike.

“The leadership of JAC expresses profound gratitude to all individuals and parties who contributed to the resolution of this matter,” he added.
