The Institute of Directors Nigeria (IoD) has commended Nigeria’s immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari’s signing of its chartered bill into law.
President, IoD, Dr Ije Jidenma made the commendation in a statement signed by Dr Segun Alabi, Head of Corporate Communications, IoD, on Monday in Lagos.
Buhari whose tenure as the 15th president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ended on May 29 had on Friday assented to some bills passed by the National Assembly.
They include Chartered Institute of Directors, Nigeria (Establishment) Act, Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (Amendment) Act for the provision of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ogoinbiri, Bayelsa State and others.
According to the IoD President, the presidential assent came as a pleasant surprise to the institute, particularly as the IoD had begun a year long activity to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
Jidenma said that by the assent, the IoD had assumed a charter status which conferred on it the responsibility to organise and deliver director development trainings, capacity development programmes and corporate governance practices in Nigeria.
“We are pleased to announce that the Institute of Directors Nigeria Charter Bill has been signed into law which means the institute would now be known as Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria.
“This has also confirmed the leading status of the institute as the apex body upholding sound corporate governance practices and ethical standards in Nigeria.
“We are indeed grateful to both the National Assembly and Nigeria’s immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari for painstakingly following through the process that has brought this to fruition.
“This has been a long journey and we are excited that it has finally come as a befitting 40th anniversary gift to the institute.”
