The distribution and installation of no less than 20,000 prepaid meters by the Lagos State Government will commence soon, Nigerian NewsDirect has gathered.

Report gathered revealed that while the State Governor has approved the project which is being executed under the State’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the distribution is being delayed by ongoing execution processes to determine and fix every necessary infrastructures needed for the installation of the meters.

Report gathered revealed that among the areas to benefit from the distribution include Mushin, Agege, Alimosho, Isale-Eko among others.

It was however gathered that the delay in the distribution owes to some feasibility processes carried out by a german development Agency to install all necessary infrastructures and the corresponding need to determine the level of energy consumed in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, it has been gathered that the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is set to have a State Electricity Policy that will serve as a blueprint for the attainment of a universal access to electricity in the State.

The Commissioner noted that the Governor has approved the procurement and installation of 20,000 units of Prepaid Energy Meters for Communities in Lagos State as a way of improving electricity supply in the affected communities.

The Commissioner also emphasised that the Sanwo-Olu led Administration has concluded arrangement with a leading smart metering solution company on meter supply to target low income communities and also identified transmission infrastructure challenges across the State.

Odusote also recalled that a program titled Smart Hackathon 2020, was launched last year July by Governor Sanwo-Olu where the Governor revealed that the idea was to design, produce and mass-distribute affordable and reliable Smart Meters in Nigeria.

He however disclosed that for all areas experiencing black-out owing to non working street lights, the State has set the end of July as the timeline to ensure all street lights are fixed to lighten up the entire metropolis.
