INEC warns media against fake, misleading news ahead of the Edo gubernatorial election

In preparation for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong warning against the dissemination of fake news and misinformation throughout the electoral process.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized the crucial role of the media in maintaining the election’s integrity. Olumekun, represented by Mary Nkem, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, highlighted the risks associated with false information, especially in today’s digital era.

Olumekun cautioned that misleading news could disrupt the electoral process, diminish public trust, and incite unnecessary tensions. He stated, “In this digital age, we are highly aware of the threats posed by fake and misleading news, particularly during elections. Such information can destabilize the process, erode public confidence, and provoke unrest.”

To address these issues, INEC has committed to transparency and will provide timely updates. Olumekun assured that the public could rely on the commission for accurate information and encouraged voters and the media to verify any election-related news directly with INEC through the available channels.

“The commission is taking proactive measures to combat misinformation, including maintaining transparency and frequent updates following each commission meeting,” he added. “As we approach the Edo governorship election, we will enhance our information dissemination efforts and have put measures in place to minimize the spread of false information.”

While INEC is working to reduce the risks of fake news through regular communication with stakeholders and the media, Olumekun stressed the importance of vigilance from journalists. He urged, “We cannot tackle this challenge alone. We rely on the media to help counter misinformation about the commission and the electoral process. We encourage the public and media to verify any election-related information directly with us before sharing it.”

INEC has also been collaborating with security agencies and local stakeholders to ensure a smooth election process. Preparations include the installation of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines and the printing of triplicate copies of the voters’ register for all 4,519 polling units in the state.

The Edo governorship election is set to take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
