INEC officially closes campaigns ahead of Edo governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the closure of campaigns for the 2024 Edo governorship election.

This directive was communicated in a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, on Thursday.

Olumekun reminded all political parties that, as stipulated by Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, all campaign activities must cease by midnight tonight.

“From September 19, 2024, no political party in Edo State is permitted to conduct rallies, processions, or media campaigns,” he stated.

The closure of campaigns is enforced under Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022, which includes penalties for violations.

Also, on Election Day, Saturday, September 21, candidates and their supporters are prohibited from appearing at polling units in campaign attire or with any campaign materials.

INEC urged all parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere strictly to these regulations to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process. “It is crucial that we maintain the integrity of the election, and compliance with these legal requirements is essential,” Olumekun emphasized.
