“INEC is just another branch of the APC,” – Imo LP gubernatorial candidate
Senator Athan Achonu, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 Imo State governorship election, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of functioning as an extension of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This accusation was made during a conversation with journalists in Owerri on Wednesday, following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling affirming Governor Hope Uzodinma’s victory in the gubernatorial race.
Achonu criticized the current state of democracy in Nigeria, describing it as a “circus” and expressing discontent with the judiciary’s handling of election disputes. He stated, “It has become painfully evident that INEC is now effectively an arm of the APC, reducing our democratic institutions to mere spectacles.”
He further commented on the protracted legal battle he engaged in, which included the tribunal, Appeal Court, and ultimately, the Supreme Court. He reflected on the verdict delivered concerning the November 11, 2023, governorship election, and lamented the judiciary’s role in overshadowing the electorate’s will.
Achonu denounced the existing political culture fostered by the APC, alleging that it manipulates election results and dismisses opposition grievances by directing them to the courts. He argued that, in Nigeria, judicial decisions now supersede popular votes, and he expressed concern over the judiciary’s inability to compel INEC to act appropriately in election petitions.
In response, MaryAnn Gods light, INEC’s spokesperson in Imo State, defended the commission’s independence, stating that INEC operates in accordance with Nigeria’s constitutional mandates and should not be judged by one individual’s opinion.
Cajethan Duke, the Imo State Publicity Secretary of the APC, dismissed Achonu’s allegations as “laughable, ridiculous, and delusional,” expressing disdain for the claims.
