INEC chairman urges heightened vigilance in preparation for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo

Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure the smooth execution of the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states. This appeal was made during a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in Abuja on Wednesday.

The elections are scheduled for September 21, 2024, in Edo State, and November 16, 2024, in Ondo State. Yakubu emphasized the importance of safeguarding election materials, personnel, and processes, and reminded security forces to follow the established rules of engagement.

He expressed appreciation for the support of security agencies in recent electoral activities, including the Continuous Voter Registration. Yakubu said, “Security agencies need to be more vigilant now. It is crucial to address any real or potential threats to ensure peaceful and transparent elections. With only 37 days until the Edo election and 93 days before Ondo’s, we must ensure that the training of election officials, logistics, polling, and collation activities proceed without disruption.”

Yakubu also called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to maintain civility as campaigns intensify, noting that peaceful campaigns often lead to peaceful elections. He urged a reduction in negative rhetoric.

Additionally, Yakubu mentioned upcoming bye-elections to fill vacancies in various states, including Rivers, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Oyo. Timetables for these bye-elections will be released soon.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, addressing political tensions and intra-party disputes, warned against any attempts to disrupt the Edo governorship election. Represented by Hassan Abdullahi, Director of Internal Security, Ribadu affirmed the government’s commitment to a peaceful and credible election and stated that any interference would be regarded as an assault on democratic values. He assured that security agencies are on high alert and will respond decisively to threats.

Ribadu reassured Edo voters of government support and encouraged them to report any suspicious activities. He emphasized the role of security personnel and election officials as “guardians of democracy” responsible for ensuring a safe and secure voting environment.

The final list of candidates for the gubernatorial elections has been published, with 34 candidates from 17 political parties contesting in each state. The total number of voters in Edo and Ondo states is 4,682,086.
