Independence Day celebration: Police heighten security in Imo amid alleged IPOB threat
In response to an alleged plot by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to disrupt the 2024 Independence Day celebration, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, has, in collaboration with sister security agencies, positioned security personnel at strategic points across the 27 LGAs in the state.
Spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command ASP Henry Okoye in a statement on Monday disclosed that the joint security operation is aimed at ensuring safe and peaceful Independence Day celebration throughout the state and to curtail any social unrest that may arise during and after the event.
“As part of this strategy, joint patrols and confidence-building measures are actively underway. These operations are designed to deter criminal activities and reassure citizens that they can go about their daily lives without fear.
“In response to recent threats from the proscribed IPOB/ESN militia group, the Police Command has established robust security measures to address any potential risks.
“Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest Police Station or via 0803 477 3600, reinforcing our shared commitment to community safety,” the statement said.
