The Ondo House of Assembly has urged the state government to enhance the effectiveness of the state Security Network, known as “Amotekun,” in combating criminal activities throughout the state. Speaker Chief Olamide Oladiji made this call following a deliberation on public safety issues by the assembly on Thursday. He emphasized the need for adequate logistics and funding to support the corps’ efforts in securing lives and property.
Oladiji, who read the resolution after the discussion, highlighted the recent killing of two farmers in the Akoko area by suspected herdsmen. He expressed concern over the disturbing incident, noting that it is at odds with the state’s reputation for peace. As representatives of the people, the assembly members are committed to finding solutions to address criminal activities in the state.
Oladiji supported the idea of establishing a unit of forest ranger forces within the corps to patrol the state’s forests and called for greater collaboration between Amotekun and other security agencies. He also urged residents to provide useful information to aid in security efforts and assured continued support for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s efforts to ensure safety.
Earlier, Mr. Raymond Daodu from Akoko South West Constituency I/PDP emphasized the urgency of the matter, expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation. He highlighted the troubling trend of farmers being attacked while working to support the economy.
Dr. Christopher Ogunlana from Irele-APC suggested restructuring the security outfit and called for the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators. He stressed the need for improved coordination among security agencies to address the issue of herdsmen.
Mr. Rotimi Abitogun from Akure South Constituency II/APC highlighted the severity of the insecurity problem and urged the government to take proactive measures. Mr. Fatai Atere from Akoko North-West/APC recommended that all motorcycles in the state be registered to help curb crime and that security agents be stationed at key locations.
Alao Olatunji Oshati from Ose Constituency-APC advocated for effective local government administration to establish a vigilante group that could act as local police to address security concerns. Additionally, the assembly passed a bill to amend the Ondo State House of Assembly Service Commission Law 2021.
