If you want to be president in 2023, join APC —Buhari
…says one man cannot decide for APC from Lagos
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has urged politicians seeking to be president in 2023 to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The President made this disclosure on Thursday in an exclusive interview with ARISE TV.
When asked about his succession plan, he said, “The succession plan depends on the party. We are going to leave it for the party. The party will sit and make decision by the constituency they want and so on. So, those who want to be president should better join APC.”
President Buhari also noted that APC would decide which region the presidency would be zoned to in 2023.
He added that the APC caretaker committee would submit a report to him by the end of June.
He added that report would show when the APC would organise its convention, and the issue of zoning in the party is beyond one man sitting in Lagos to determine who flies the party flag, but rather it will be determined by the party.
He said, “I told the Acting Chairman and the committee to give me the report by the end of the month on the convention they are going to conduct and then arrange general elections until 2023. And we started this from the bottom to the up, so that members of the party will be sure they are involved in decision making.
“Nobody is just going to sit in Lagos and tell them what to do. This is what we are arranging,” Buhari said.
Several supporters of APC leader in Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, have been clamouring for the party to zone the Presidency to the South, adding that there was a gentleman agreement for such when the party was being formed in 2013.
Tinubu is believed to be nursing a Presidential ambition although he has yet to confirm or deny it.
