Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said it arrested 38,869 traffic offenders for committing 42,814 offences in 2021.
A breakdown of the figures revealed that 8,111 were arrested for speed limit violation; 7,860 were apprehended for using mobile phones while driving; 5,436 were arrested for seat belt violation and about 21,407 arrested for other offences.
These were contained in the command’s End-of-Year Review signed by the Sector Commander, Oga Ochi, and obtained recently by our correspondent in Abuja.
Ochi said, “As part of the strategy to achieve reduction in road crashes and compliance with road traffic regulations, the command carried out robust enforcement during the year under review.
“A total number of 38,869 vehicles/offenders were arrested between January and December 2021, while a total of 42,814 offences were booked.”
Ochi also said no fewer than 964 crashes were recorded in the territory.
Of the number, 144 were classified as fatal; 626 as serious; and 194 as minor.
The FRSC boss disclosed that 1,914 persons were injured, while 189 died in the crashes.
He said 727 cases, representing 75%, were caused by speed limit violation; 109 cases (11%) were caused by dangerous driving; 46 cases (4.8%) due to route violation; and 82 (8.5%) cases classified as others.
