A Nigerian socio-political activist, Reno Omokri, has lambasted the Nigerian Army for detaining a female soldier, Hannah Sofiat, who received a marriage proposal from a member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Kwara State.
Reports state that a few days after the video of the proposal went viral on social media, a report emerged that the Nigerian Army had detained Sofiat for going against its established rules.
The development has stimulated controversies across the country as some Nigerians argued that the army has violated the fundamental human rights of the female soldier.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Reno said the Nigerian Army “should have promoted the love story as a recruitment tool” to build more morale.
He said, “The Nigerian Army, which is currently rehabilitating Boko Haram, is penalising Private Hannah Sofiat for accepting a proposal from a corper? Is that not madness?
“The Nigerian Army should have promoted the love story as a recruitment tool. They should have brought in the cameras and celebrated the couple. It would have built morale. But instead, they chose to punish love!”.
