Officials from the Sokoto State Hisbah Board have intercepted and seized over 200 cartons of substances suspected to be alcoholic drinks at the Sokoto Central Motor Park.
Speaking to journalists at the Hisbah office in Sokoto on Wednesday, the state Hisbah Commander, Usman Jatau, displayed the confiscated items.
Jatau revealed that no individuals had come forward to claim ownership of the seized goods and stated that the Hisbah Board would consult the State Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney General to decide on the next steps.
The commander also clarified that the regulations governing the conduct of residents in the state were not meant to target any particular group or cause disruption but rather to serve as guiding principles for daily life.
In his appeal to the residents, Jatau urged them to “fear Allah (SWT) in all our dealings” and to avoid prohibited activities such as improper mingling between males and females. He stressed that dress codes and social interactions should comply with Islamic law.
“Taking advantage of any space or hideout for immoral acts is prohibited,” he added. “Any form of assault or deceit towards fellow Muslims, whether direct or indirect, must be avoided.”
Jatau further emphasised that all ceremonies, celebrations, and anniversaries should adhere to Sharia teachings. He also warned against the sale or distribution of illicit substances or drugs at public gatherings or events, which is strictly forbidden.
