High debt profile allegations: We have reduced debt, avoided borrowing — Adeleke

The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has refuted allegations that his administration has led to an increase in the state’s debt. Responding to claims on Sunday, Governor Adeleke stressed that his government has not borrowed any funds since he took office in 2022.

He further highlighted that between December 2022 and June 2024, the state’s domestic debt had been reduced by an impressive 42%, from ¦ 148.37 billion to ¦ 86.06 billion, while external debt decreased by 15%, from $91.78 million to $78.17 million.

“This achievement reflects our administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, prudent resource management, and sustainable development for the people of Osun State,” Governor Adeleke said.

He emphasised that his administration had prioritised the reduction of the state’s financial burden while ensuring continued investments in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and workers’ welfare.

“I thank the people of Osun State for their continued trust and support. Together, we will continue to build a financially stable and prosperous state for future generations,” the Governor added.

The Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, also responded to the allegations, asserting that the recent data from the Debt Management Office (DMO) had vindicated the Adeleke-led administration. He refuted claims from certain online platforms and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the state’s debt had increased.

Rasheed clarified that the state’s domestic debt had decreased by 42% and external debt by 15%, with a reduction in domestic debt of ¦ 62.31 billion and external debt of $13.61 million since the current administration took office.

“The facts are clear: the figures from the DMO expose the falsehoods being spread by certain media outlets. The truth remains that Osun State’s debt profile has decreased under the leadership of Governor Adeleke,” Rasheed said.

He added that the Governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability would continue, as his government focused on the welfare of the people.
