Gunmen kill 6 in Benue attack

At least six people were reportedly killed by gunmen, believed to be armed herders, in recent attacks on two communities in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The assaults occurred on Friday in the Iwari and Olegagbane communities within the local government area.

According to local sources, one person was killed in the Iwari community, while five others lost their lives in the Olegagbane community. A resident named Adayi described the attacks, stating, “Armed assailants targeted Iwari on Friday, killing one person and injuring several others. Later the same day, they attacked Olegagbane, resulting in the deaths of five individuals.”

The Chairman of the Local Government Area, Phillip Ebenyakwu, confirmed the attacks and expressed deep concern about the increasing violence in the region. He reported that the attackers not only killed but also stole and looted from the communities before fleeing. Ebenyakwu stated, “The situation is indeed confirmed. The attackers came, caused destruction, and took away valuables before escaping. The motives behind these attacks remain unclear, but they are increasingly intolerable. I am in contact with security agencies, who are actively addressing the situation.”

Ebenyakwu also highlighted the severe impact on the local population, noting that over 2,000 people have been displaced due to the attacks. He mentioned that around nine villages have been affected and noted that although the State Emergency Management Agency has provided some relief materials, they are insufficient to meet the needs of the displaced individuals.

Meanwhile, Catherine Anene, spokesperson for the state police command, indicated in a text message that she was not yet aware of the incidents.
