Group supports orphans, vulnerable children in 2 states
An NGO, the Green Pasture and Home Initiative (GPHI), says it has offered support for orphans and vulnerable children in Kano and Ondo States.
The Executive Director of the organisation, Comfort Williams, stated this at a news conference to commemorate its 20th anniversary on Tuesday in Kano.
Williams said the organisation operated orphanage homes, which offered care and support services to orphans, caregivers and their children in Kano and Ondo States.
She explained that the Kano orphanage was designed for 150 children, with safe, secure and habitable environment, and that trained personnel were engaged to effectively run its activities.
The director said the organisation also established a nursery and primary school to cater for the orphans and vulnerable children at Sabo Gari in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
“Presently, the school enrolled over 500 pupils based on the available space,” she said.
According to her, the mission of the organisation is to protect and promote the rights of orphans and vulnerable children, youths and widows to give hope to the less privileged in the society.
William said: “Fighting for the rights of children who are neglected and abandoned in the society, and those who suffer from HIV/AIDS, poverty, diseases, injustice, violence and teenage pregnancy.
“These are the major pillars to curtail the menace of social vices as well as enhancing peaceful coexistence in the country.
“GPHI is a member of the Association of Orphan and Vulnerable Children in Nigeria (AONN), Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in Nigeria (ASOHON) and other relevant agencies that fight for the rights of children.”
She advocated the inclusion of the enrollment of children in orphanage homes into the National Health Insurance scheme (NHIS), to uplift the health status of the less privileged in the society.
She urged government at all levels to evolve proactive modalities to enhance the operations of orphanages.
Williams called on wealthy individuals to support the vulnerable in order to alleviate their sufferings and build a crime free society.
