Government should work more with Estate Surveyors and Valuers — ESV Saheed Makinde

Associate Member Of the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers and the Immediate Past Honorary National Publicity Secretary of Nigerian Institute Of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Otunba Saheed Bamiji Makinde has said that government should work with Estate Surveyors and Valuers rather than giving their jobs out to other professions.

He made this known during an interview on the on ‘ Housing And You with Emeka Darlington’ on Premier 93.5 fm.

The programme involves professionals in the building environment, stakeholders and key players and the edition was organised in view of the Valuation Day held on the 5th Of May, 2023 with the theme: Valuation: Key to decision making for Asset Resource Optimization.

According to him, “We are trained to give and we are licensed by virtue of the legal recognition and even the Federal Government, the State Government, the Ministries and Departments many a time still find it difficult to know that this particular job within the built environment is the sole responsibility of Estate Surveyors and Valuers,”he said.

He gave credence to the President of Nigerian Institute Of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Estate Surveyor and Valuer, John bull Amoyabo, who took it upon himself to ensure that the profession is taken to greater heights.

Expounding on who a surveyor is, he made it known that surveying is more than measurements and recording.

“We have land surveyors, quantity surveyors and Estate Surveyors and Valuers.

“An Estate Surveyor and Valuer is somebody who has passed through the educational prerequisite at the tertiary level and the prerequisite professional exam organised by Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers and passed. Having passed, the individual will be recommended by NIESV to Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVABON) and has become an Associate Member Of Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers and ESVABON on recommendation will issue stamp and seal which certifies and qualifies an individual as an Estate Surveyor and Valuer.

“ESVABON is a regulatory body and works with Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers in order to give better service in value addition to the society and to the general public.

“Advocacy has been done for sensitisation of the general public on Estate Surveying and Valuation working with the Ministry of Works, Housing And Urban Development,”  he reiterated.

He made it known that Estate Agency is one of the scopes of Estate Surveying and Valuation and to achieve the best objectives, the best professionals must be appointed even to various state levels.

“Government should be concerned about land provision and housing delivery and put a smooth process in place.”

However, he urged the State Government to put basic prerequisites so that people can have title to their lands and proper land documentation.

The importance of the Valuation Day according to him was to sensitise the general public and prospective clients to know the importance of Valuation which is the art and science of estimating the worth of interest in land or any other asset at a particular point in time for various purposes considering various economic factors.

He further said that Estate Surveying and Valuation are very necessary in various aspects of the society and the right professionals should be employed so as to avoid losses and setbacks in the nearest future.
