Gov Umo Eno denies ordering demolitions of farmlands, eviction of occupants
By Dennis Udoma, Uyo
The Akwa Ibom State Government has refuted allegations claiming its involvement in the eviction and demolition of Anyam/Esa Union Farmlands along new Ring Road 3 in Uyo, the state capital.
Capt. Iniobong Ekong (Rtd), the Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, clarified this stance during a meeting on Tuesday with owners of the affected land parcel, led by Mr. Power Anthony and accompanied by editors from local media organisations.
The controversy arose following a briefing on April 2, 2024, where the affected group accused Governor Umo Eno of sanctioning the demolition and eviction. Former Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Hon Ekerete Ekpenyong and his team were also implicated in the demolition exercise, purportedly acting on behalf of the state government.
Mr. Anthony, in a statement to our correspondent in Uyo, reiterated that the state government has denied issuing any directives for the demolition of the farmlands.
He emphasised, “We are not aware of any incident on the Anyam/Esa Union farmlands or the demolition of people’s properties. We encourage those affected to proceed with their publications for the sake of peace.”
The Lands Commissioner underscored that the government supports the publication of facts that could help resolve the land dispute, reiterating that the government was not involved in the demolition exercise.
Anthony also mentioned that the affected landowners have lodged a petition with the National Assembly, and Governor Umo Eno has engaged with the Joint Senate and House Committee on Public Petitions, Ethics, and Privileges.
Governor Umo Eno reportedly assured the committee of his commitment to amicably resolve the issue, stating, “I am a pastor with a good example; the matter should be discontinued, and I will address the outstanding issues with the group.”
