Gov. Bago inaugurates new high court

Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger has inaugurated the High Court of Justice in Lapai, marking a significant milestone in the state’s quest for justice and equality.

Bago, represented by his deputy, Mr Yakubu Garba, at the inauguration in Lapai on Thursday, described the court as a symbol of collective commitment to bringing justice closer to the people at the grassroots.

He explained that the judiciary play a pivotal role in consolidating democracy, safeguarding the rule of law and ensuring that citizens have access to justice.

“Its impartiality and strength instill public confidence in the system, providing a sense of security to all,” he said.

Bago lauded the judiciary for its dedication to upholding justice, fairness and accountability.

He commended the leadership style of the chief judge which had elevated the judiciary’s reputation as a model for others.

He said the Lapai High Court symbolises the state’s vision to decentralise the judicial process aimed at making legal remedies accessible regardless of location.

Bago expressed the state government’s commitments to strengthening the rule of law for economic growth, social stability and good governance.

Earlier, Hajiya Halima Abdulmalik, Chief Judge of Niger, said the newly constructed High Court was a significant milestone towards a stronger, more just and equitable judiciary.

She disclosed that N100 million was appropriated for the structure in the 2024 budget, adding that N83.3 million was expended covering fencing, furnishing and landscaping.

Abdulmalik called for community engagement, understanding of rights and seeking justice by citizens when needed for a thriving society.

In her welcome address, Hajiya Amina Musa, Chief Registrar, said the court complex was equipped with modern facilities to ensure swift and efficient justice delivery in Lapai and environs.

She pledged the judiciary’s optimal use of the facility in upholding highest standards in its operations.

Also, Malam Nasiru Mua’zu, Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, called on the people of the area to leverage on the facility for the enhancement of judicial services.
