Gov. Adeleke embarks on electricity generation for Osun state

On Thursday, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke announced plans for his administration to initiate electricity generation projects utilizing the state’s river and solar resources.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 33KV feeder line construction in Ilesa, Adeleke outlined his vision for Osun to achieve energy self-sufficiency and potentially export electricity to neighboring states.

The governor highlighted that this project had been stalled for over 11 years, during which time residents of Obokun and three other local government areas endured severe power shortages, economic setbacks, and disruptions.

Adeleke further revealed that the state had prepared a draft electricity bill and policy aimed at expanding power generation and distribution. He instructed the Ministry of Energy to formulate an implementation plan with clear timelines and objectives.

“We have a comprehensive strategy to revamp the state’s energy and electricity sector through well-defined policies and legislation,” Adeleke stated. “I am excited to reiterate that Osun has a draft electricity bill and policy designed to enhance power generation and distribution.”

Once enacted, this legislation is expected to transform the electricity landscape in Osun. The governor noted the state’s abundant river and solar resources and announced plans to generate electricity from these sources. He also mentioned issuing licenses for private electricity generators and regulating the state’s power distributor, Ibadan DisCo. Additionally, a new regulatory agency will oversee the state’s power sector.

Describing electricity as a critical driver of economic growth, Adeleke emphasized that consistent power supply would foster economic activity. He expressed hope that Osun State would not only become energy self-sufficient but also export power to adjacent regions.

He extended congratulations to the people of Obokun Local Government and other communities benefiting from the new 33KV feeder line. He specifically acknowledged the residents of Omi Aladiye, Akad, those along the Ilesa–Osogbo road, Igbajo in Boluwaduro Local Government, and Kajola and Osunjela in Atakumosa West Local Government, saying, “Imole has come to your doorstep.”

Commissioner for Energy, Mr. Festus Adeyemo, noted that the new project would support communities in Obokun, Ilesa West, Atakumosa West, and Boluwaduro local government areas.
