Gateway airport boasts longest runway in Nigeria, 95% complete — Ogun Commissioner
The Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, has revealed that the Ogun Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport currently features the longest runway in Nigeria. He further stated that the airport is 95% complete and awaiting approval to begin its commercial operations.
Speaking to journalists during a tour of the facility, Engr. Akinsanya confirmed that all the essential elements required to make the airport fully operational are in place.
He explained: “The basic elements to make it a functional airport are in place. The runway is the longest in Nigeria right now. The main runway measures 3.4 kilometres, and with the safety zone, an additional 600 metres, making the total length 4 kilometres. It is also 60 metres wide. In terms of airport classification, it is designated as 4E.”
“The only classification above that is 4F. In terms of length, we are well within specifications. The runway is completed, and the feedback we have received is that it is currently the best runway in Nigeria.
“Overall, with the progress we’ve made, I am confident that we are ready to go. Once we receive approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for commercial operations, we will proceed. At the moment, we have approval for chartered flights.”
Engr. Akinsanya further stated that the airport is “95% complete,” with key facilities already in place.
“The runway has been finished for some time, and the fire station is complete. You can see the two fire tenders outside. We are currently at CAD-6, and with an additional fire tender, we are moving to CAD-7.
“The only remaining component is the permanent terminal building, which is about 90% complete. Overall, everything is set, and we are working closely with our partners, including NCAA, NAMA, and NIMET, to ensure everything is fully functional.”
