Gallagher seals Atletico Madrid move
England midfielder Conor Gallagher has finalized his transfer from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old, who progressed through Chelsea’s youth system, has signed a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid following an agreement between the clubs for a reported €40 million ($43.7 million) fee.
Gallagher’s future had been uncertain as he approached the last year of his Chelsea contract and with questions about his role under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Atletico Madrid announced: “Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Conor Gallagher, who will join the club until 2029.”
Gallagher was a regular for Chelsea over the past two seasons, having previously spent time on loan at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom, and Crystal Palace. He made 95 appearances for the Blues, scoring 10 goals, and captained the team several times last season.
He was also part of the England squad that reached the final of Euro 2024 this summer.
Chelsea posted on X: “Thank you and good luck, Conor.”
Gallagher expressed his gratitude to Chelsea on Instagram:
“To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true. It’s been an absolute honor every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions,” he said.
“I cherished every moment. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing the chant of my name at the Bridge was special, and the banner you displayed meant the world to me.
“Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future and hope to see you all soon at Stamford Bridge.”
