GAC endorse Meranda, as Sanwo-Olu refutes involvement in Obasa’s impeachment

…Gov Sanwo-Olu focuses on governance, not Obasa’s impeachment –  Akosile

The new Speaker of the Lagos house of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda on Tuesday,  has been endorsed by the state Governor’s Advisory Council after the sudden impeachment of the former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over “fraud allegations and abuse of power.”

She visited members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to “brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings which we have gotten.”

Recall that Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, was elected on Monday after Obasa’s 10-year reign was terminated by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house over alleged misconduct and sundry offenses.

Her ascension to the speakership set a record in the state’s political history.

Meanwhile, Meranda’s endorsement by GAC came after an aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gbenga Akosile, denied the governor’s involvement in Mr Obasa’s impeachment.

Akosile stated that Mr Sanwo-Olu “is more concerned about serious governance issues that would impact the lives of teeming Lagosians,” adding Mr Obasa’s impeachment was purely a “legislative matter.”

“The Governor is a democrat, a complete gentleman who doesn’t meddle in people’s affairs. I can’t remember him talking about any of the incidents that you mentioned. Nothing of such bothers him.

“Mr Sanwo-Olu’s interest and focus is how to develop the state further than he met it.

“This has been his major preoccupation since he assumed office as the governor of Lagos state and not to get himself involved in unproductive political skirmishes.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu believes strongly in the separation of powers. The action of the House was purely a legislative matter.”
