By Mike Adebayo, Ado-Ekiti
Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekit i (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina has tasked students of the institution on good conduct within and beyond the campus, saying such conduct would pride them as FUOYE’s ambassadors.
Besides, he urged them to shun any act capable of tarnishing the image of the university with a view not to destroying their own future. Such acts, according to him were cultism, cheating, disobedience to the University Regulations and laziness among others.
While noting that as leaders of tommorow, the students had great potential to deliver a brighter future for Nigeria, he urged them not to destroy their future with bad attitude today.
The VC made the remarks at the inauguration of new Executive members of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti Students’ Union (FUOYESU) for the 2020/2021 academic session.
Fasina who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Administration, Prof. J. Shola Omotola, said: “You have great potential to make it. You have all it takes to be successful and great in life but what you do here while you are on campus, will determine what happens to you in the future. So, be mindful of what you do now.”
In his Valecditory speech, Comrade Alabi Johnson, who is FUOYESU’s immediate past President, 2019/2020 session, said: “I express my appreciation to my members of the Excos. We disagree to agree, we agree to make progress and we make progress to conquer. It has been a great privilege to serve.
“There is no much to say other than to appreciate their support. To the fellow students, we appreciate you for the time when we were discouraged, your prayers and support have been helpful.”
Alabi listed some of the achievements of his administration to include the rebranding of the Union, distribution of nose masks to members of the University community, purchase of two mini-buses and an additional Union vehicle among others, courtesy of the support from the VC.
He also expressed his appreciation to the VC, saying, “we appreciate the VC’s efforts towards reactivating security on campus through the provision of solar street light. Also, in the event of the huge population of students on campus, for making us to activate e-voting system which has helped in ensuring free and fair poll. We also appreciate the management led by our fatherly VC for the provision of Sports facilities which has made the campus lively and lovely.
“We got a landed property and laid the foundation for the Students’ Union building. We also organized a Tradefair on campus, the Union magazine, road signs and we also appreciate the Dean of Students Affairs and the VC for their swift responses to students issues on the hostels on campus. In this regard, the DVC Administration, Professor J. Shola Omotola deserves special commendation. As Chairman of Hostel Management Committee, he was always available to attend to us.
“I commend and appreciate the new Executives. I charge you with these words: ‘that the struggle is not for the self but for the students , so take students’ welfariasm very important. I appreciate the students for giving me the support to serve you. I love you all.’”
After the former President’s speech, the new Executives were sworn in according to the University Regulations. The Dean of Students’Affairs, Prof. Dosu Malomo amplified the implication of the swearing in, saying: “With what has happened, the student Union law has been fulfilled and the new Executives have now become legitimate.”
The Students’ Senate leadership thereafter presented the amended Constitution of the students’ Union as designed by the fourth session of the Senate, to the VC who in turn handed it over to the Students Affairs officer, Mr. Johnson Adeyemo.
While receiving amended Constitution, the VC noted that the Executives should ensure that they were gender sensitive, as there was no female among the new Excos. However, he charged them to ensure that gender sensitivity was entrenched in the constitution when next it would be reviewed.
The new President, who expressed his appreciation to all and sundry, promised to build on the legacies of his predecesors to attract greater achievement for the Union. He extended a hand of fellowship to his colleagues who were his opponents during the electoral contest that brought him in, saying: “All hands must be on deck to achieve success and progress.”
The outgoing Executives garlanded both Prof. Malomo and Mr. Adeyemo in appreciation of their admirable performance in running the affairs of the students on campus.
While making his closing remarks, Prof. Malomo, said “the immediate past Executives have been perhaps, the most successful of all the others before them, in the sense that they have laid the foundation for a new Students’ Union Secretariat Complex.
“Also, they bought new mini-buses which saved a chaotic situation caused by the private transporters on campus who suddenly hiked their fares. The efforts of the Alabi led Executives saved the situation with the help of the VC and we had a smooth sailing examination weeks on campus.”
Prof. Malomo also revealed that the Management won campus, disclosing that the VC had released funds for leadership training for the new Executives so as to equip them more for successful leadership as bringing up a better plan for transportation.
