Fuel price hike is anti-people

The recent decision to increase the petrol price by the NNPC is tone deaf, and nothing short of a betrayal of the Nigerian populace. This reckless move is a stark reminder of how disconnected the ruling elite is from the harsh realities faced by ordinary citizens.

Instead of addressing the economic hardships plaguing the country, the government has opted to exacerbate them with an increase that serves only to line the pockets of those already profiting from the nation’s misery.

For years, Nigerians have been grappling with skyrocketing inflation, widespread poverty, and a crumbling infrastructure. The government’s response to these crises has been to impose further burdens on the very people who are already struggling to make ends meet.

The latest fuel price hike is a direct assault on the livelihoods of millions, pushing many further into debt and despair. It is not merely an economic policy; it is a blatant disregard for the welfare of the citizens it is supposed to serve.

The timing of this increase is particularly egregious. Just as the country is reeling from the effects of previous price hikes, the government has chosen to inflict even more pain. This latest decision comes on the heels of a period where Nigerians have already been pushed to the brink, with many households finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities.

The government’s failure to provide any tangible solutions or relief in response to the mounting economic pressures is both alarming and unacceptable.

Moreover, this price hike does not occur in a vacuum. It is part of a disturbing trend where the government’s policies seem designed not to address the structural issues within the economy but to exacerbate them. Instead of investing in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, the government seems intent on pursuing policies that benefit a select few while disregarding the broader population.

This disconnect between policy and people is emblematic of a government that has lost touch with its fundamental responsibilities.

The response from organised labour and civil society has been predictable but necessary. The threat of nationwide strikes and protests is a legitimate reaction to a policy that will have devastating consequences for the average Nigerian.

The labour unions’ preparedness to take to the streets in opposition to this price hike is a crucial defence against the government’s reckless policies. It is a call to action for every Nigerian to stand up against the oppressive economic measures that are driving the country into deeper turmoil.

In the face of this crisis, it is imperative for the government to reconsider its stance and take immediate steps to mitigate the impact of this price increase. This includes providing substantial relief to those most affected and addressing the underlying issues that have led to such desperate measures.

The government must also engage in transparent and meaningful dialogue with labour leaders and civil society to find a more equitable solution that does not further burden the Nigerian people.

The new petrol price hike is a damning indictment of the current administration’s priorities and its commitment to the welfare of its citizens. It is a harsh reminder that, while the government may pursue policies that enrich a few, it is the ordinary Nigerians who bear the brunt of these misguided decisions.

The time has come for a fundamental shift in approach—one that genuinely addresses the needs of the populace and rebuilds trust between the government and the people it serves.
