Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged to establish an institution of higher learning in Opobo Town to drive sustainable academic and economic growth in the area.
The Governor also promised to carry out land reclamation projects to create more space for critical infrastructure aimed at enhancing the quality of life and generating robust employment opportunities.
Governor Fubara made the pledge during the inauguration of the 7km Opobo Town Ring Road, which includes three crossing bridges, in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area on Monday. The project will significantly improve connectivity and accessibility within Opobo Town and surrounding communities.
He emphasised that these development efforts, when fully realised, would elevate Opobo Town and position it as a model of progress among other local government areas in the state.
“We have more plans in store. We intend to bring a higher institution to this area. We will also undertake more land reclamation, as land is a major challenge here. Our goal is to empower you so that you no longer have to rely on me. Moreover, we will ensure that we create the environment that will lead to more people being gainfully employed and empowered. That is the only way Opobo will thrive,” he said.
On the Opobo Ring Road project, Governor Fubara explained that while the project was initially flagged off by the previous administration on May 28, 2023, the design and execution were undertaken by his government to ensure the current high standards.
The Governor expressed gratitude for the continued support of the local community and urged them to remain steadfast. “God does not stop halfway in His work, and neither should we. This project is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together,” he added.
He further praised the peace and unity within the Opobo/Nkoro area, calling on political leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to maintain the harmony that has characterised the region. “Opobo/Nkoro is known as one of the most peaceful local governments in the state. While we are not crime-free, the level of crime here is manageable. This peace is a result of the strong interrelationships among the people.”
Dr. Dauda Lawal, the Governor of Zamfara State, who was the special guest of honour at the inauguration, commended Governor Fubara for his visionary leadership. He noted that the development of infrastructure such as roads, particularly in rural areas, is crucial for socio-economic growth and improved well-being.
“This project reflects the commitment of Governor Fubara to infrastructure development, which will enhance socio-economic conditions and improve the living standards of the people of Rivers State,” Lawal said.
“The Opobo Ring Road and bridges will undoubtedly improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and provide better access to essential services for the residents, as well as the entire kingdom.”
Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, explained the technical challenges faced during the construction of the road, including the terrain. “This 7km road is 7.3 metres wide and includes three bridges and around 4km of drainage. Due to the nature of the soil, we had to fill many sections with imported materials, with the highest filled area reaching 10 metres high.”
In his welcome address, Hon. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, described the inauguration of the Ring Road as historic, highlighting the positive transformation it would bring to the kingdom. “We are proud of this project and are committed to protecting it so that it continues to serve our socio-economic needs for years to come.”
Hadi Chehade, Managing Director of Lubrik Construction Company, the firm responsible for the project, expressed pride in having contributed to the iconic road, which he believes will transform Opobo Town and thanked Governor Fubara for trusting them with this significant task.
