Abducted medical students freed by operatives, no ransom paid – Police

On Saturday, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the release of 20 medical students abducted along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road. The students, from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were en route to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students’ annual convention when they were seized by bandits.

The abduction sparked significant public outcry, prompting Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to deploy tactical operatives and resources, including helicopters, drones, and tactical vehicles, to facilitate a rapid rescue. Additional detectives were also dispatched to Benue State to assist in the operation.

Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi clarified on Saturday that, contrary to rumors circulating on social media, no ransom was paid for the students’ release. Adejobi detailed that the students were rescued through a tactically and professionally executed operation, and commended the efforts of the security agencies, local communities, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). He assured that more details would be provided in due course.
