Foundation commences free cancer screening for 200 women in Gombe
A non-governmental organization, Amen HealthCare and Empowerment Foundation in collaboration with Gombe Local Government Council, on Monday commenced free screening for breast and cervical cancer for 200 women in the local government.
Flagging- off the exercise, Dr Habu Dahiru, state Commissioner for Health commended the organizers of the programme which he described as `timely’ considering the global increase in cases of cancer.
Dahiru noted that by the time cancer symptoms appeared, the disease might have begun to spread and become hard to treat, therefore, early detection was important for easier treatment.
“The programme is a laudable initiative because it will go a long way in preventing cervical and breast cancer among our women by improving early detection,” he said.
Dahiru said Amen HealthCare and Empowerment Foundation had been doing a lot in Gombe, and he called on other organizations to emulate it.
Malama Hauwa Yuguda, Assistant Programme Officer of the Foundation said aim of the screening was to detect the disease in early stages so as to increase chances of survival.
Alhaji .Aliyu Usman, Chairman, Gombe Local Government Council, assured women in Gombe State of more meaningful programmes which would improve their wellbeing.
Alhaji Abdulkadir Abubakar, Senior District Head of Gombe council expressed appreciation to organizers of the programme for conducting the exercise in his community.
