Fostering innovation in security technologies critical to staying ahead of fraudsters — NCC EVC

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta has called for the rise in innovation in security technologies to tackle fraudulent vices in Nigeria’s cyberspace.

The NCC EVC proffered this at the 2nd quarter 2023 Industry Consumer Advisory Forum (ICAF) Meeting (Open forum) in Lagos last week emphasizsing that innovation is key to staying ahead of e-fraud.

Professor Danabatta highlighted the responsibility of telecom operators in accordance with the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 to ensure the security and integrity of their networks and to prevent it from being used in, or in relation to, the commission of any offence under any law in operation in Nigeria.

“With the increasing uptake of digital financial services and the advent of disruptive technologies, the issue of cybersecurity has become increasingly important,” he noted.

He therfore urged telecom operators to invest in robust infrastructure, employ state-of-the-art security measures, and conduct regular audits to identify vulnerabilities and address them promptly.

Emphasising the importance of innovation amongst the telecom operators, consumers and the academia, Prof. Danabatta said collaboration will drive innovation in cybersecurity and produce effective countermeasures against e-fraud.

According to the EVC, “Advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analytics can enable the detection of anomalous behaviors, identify potential threats, and respond swiftly to emerging fraud trends.”

In his welcome address, the Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau of the commission, Alhaji Alkasim Abubakar Umar, reiterated the commitment of the Commission to creating an enabling environment for the sustainable growth of the telecommunications sector.

He urged stakeholders to prioritise consumer education and awareness to contribute to the broader fight against cybercrime.
