Former deputy governorship candidate of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Ondo state, Gboye Adegbenro has called on Nigerians to reflect on the gains of June 12, 1993 general election and work towards strengthening the nation’s democratic governance.

Adegbenro, who made the call on Monday in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists in Akure, the Ondo State capital, noted that but for the great impact of June 12, 1993 general elections, the nation’s transition to democracy might not have been achieved in 1999.

The former Commissioner for Works, who is now a PDP Chieftain in the state said the nation could only develop under a democratically elected government.

Adegbenro said, “It’s time we reflect on the gains of June 12, 1993 general elections and fashion the way forward in entrenching a true democratic system in the nation.

“We could have been wallowing in a militarised system if not for the way the citizenry fought for return to democratic governance right from the moment the June 12, 1993 general elections believed to have been won by the Bashorun M.K.O Abiola as the presidential candidate then was annulled.

“He eventually paid the supreme price, including a lot Nigerians, to ensure democratic government is installed for the citizenry to thrive in all areas of their endeavour.

“Now that another general election is around the corner, it is pertinent for every Nigerian with permanent voter’s cards (PVC) to take their destinies in their hands by voting for the right candidate they believe would be able to rescue the nation from the current socio-economic and political challenges.”
