The Kogi State Government has proactively opened a 5-kilometre alternate route in Nyamanyama Village along the Ganaja–Ajaokuta road.
This strategic measure is set aside to mitigate potential hardships for motorists should the primary route become impassable due to rising floodwaters.
Governor Alhaji Ahmed Ododo directed the Flood Disaster Response Team to act swiftly to ensure seamless travel in the region as water levels approach critical thresholds.
The newly opened route is expected to alleviate congestion and maintain access for the thousands who rely on the Ganaja road daily.
Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo, the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Flood Disaster Response Team, stated, “We responded immediately to the Governor’s directive, ensuring that we provide an alternative for commuters in light of the increasing flooding.”
Engr. Mohammed Yusuf, the State Commissioner for Works, expressed confidence in the initiative’s effectiveness, emphasising it as a demonstration of “responsive governance.”
He highlighted the importance of the Ganaja-Ajaokuta road, which serves as a crucial link for travellers between the South East and South South regions.
Kingsley Fanwo, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, noted the severe impact of the flooding.
“The flood is already devastating. Properties worth billions have been lost. Only 25 percent of Ibaji Local Government is above water level right now.
“The entire Kupa District has been submerged, and many communities are counting their losses. The Federal Government should come to the rescue of Kogi State; our resources are stretched as we strive to save the situation,” he lamented.
