Flood disaster: 16 dead, 3,936 households affected in Jigawa

At least 16 people have died and 3936 households have been affected by flooding in Jigawa State, according to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The agency’s executive secretary, Alh Haruna Mai Riga, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in his office.

Mai Riga said that over 700 hectares of farmland had been destroyed in Zandam village, Gwaram Local Government, and over 184 hectares of farmland had been submerged in Buji Local Government.

He added that 502 households had been displaced and exactly 722 people had been affected in Bulangu Communities, with 200 people displaced and two deaths confirmed.

The secretary explained that the flood had taken over 200 hectares of farmland, and in Gwadayi village, over 150 households had been affected, with at least 200 people displaced and taking refuge in public buildings.

He also said that in Jaji koli, over 120 people had been affected, and in Chibiri village, 150 people had been affected, with 150 people becoming homeless in Tulibukui.

Mai Riga further confirmed that no fewer than 865 people had become displaced due to the flood disaster, and 75 people in Basirka village had also become displaced after wind blew off their houses.

He added that in the state capital, Dutse, 76 households had been affected in Champ Village, and in Sule Tankarkar, 172 people had become homeless after rain destroyed their houses.

Similarly, in Kaugama, 76 households had been displaced, with 243 people confirmed affected.

The total number of households affected by the flood in the state is 3936, with 3834 people displaced across the ten affected areas, and over 2,744 hectares of farmland submerged.
