The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), on Thursday, described female genital mutilation (FGM) as a human rights violation that must be stopped.
Country Representative of UNFPA, Ms Ulla Mueller, said this at public awareness campaign, organised by United Nations to end FGM, in Abuja.
Mueller solicited for the collective commitment of all to end the practice and save the girl-child from health dangers of the practice.
“Female genital mutilation is a human rights violation. There is no medical or health justification for it. It has to stop,” she said.
The UNFPA country representative, who called on Nigerian government to support the call to end FGM, said it had no medical benefits.
Ms Naomi David, one of the participants in the awareness campaign, also condemned FGM, advising parents to desist from the practice in order to restore the sanity and dignity of the girl-child.
“To cut human being’s private part is not good. We must leave it as God created it,” she said.
