FG panel to review ASUU demands over strike threats
The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has established a sub-committee to examine the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This move follows an agreement for both parties to reconvene on September 6, 2024.
The decision was made after a two-and-a-half-hour closed-door meeting held at the Ministry of Education in Abuja on Wednesday. Attendees included ASUU leaders, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman, and other ministry officials.
In a briefing to reporters, Minister Mamman announced the formation of the sub-committee tasked with reviewing ASUU’s demands and addressing any unresolved issues.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed optimism that the issues would be resolved before the September 6 meeting. He stated, “We have reviewed the issues and have given the government until the next meeting to address them. We are committed to resolving these matters in the best interest of Nigerian students.”
ASUU’s demands include a thorough reform of the university system, improvements in infrastructure, greater academic freedom, and a more sustainable funding model. The union also seeks the release of revitalization funds for universities, a renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, and the disbursement of earned allowances for university lecturers.
