FG launches virtual academy to boost digital safety, data privacy awareness

The Federal Government has introduced a new online learning platform aimed at helping Nigerians develop critical skills in digital safety and data privacy.
The Data Protection Virtual Academy, launched on Tuesday in Abuja, is designed to educate a broad audience, including civil servants, private sector employees, and young job seekers, on how to safeguard personal data and navigate digital spaces responsibly.
The unveiling took place during the opening ceremony of the 8th Network of African Data Protection Authorities Conference and Annual General Meeting.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijjani, described the academy as a pioneering initiative and a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital development. He said the platform marks the first of its kind globally and demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness to build a digitally secure and globally competitive workforce.
“This academy offers everyone, from civil servants to young job seekers, access to hands-on training in data protection and cyber hygiene,” Tijjani said.
“It represents a bold and forward-thinking step towards preparing our population for the realities of a data-driven world.”
The academy offers virtual instruction on critical topics such as internet safety, secure password practices, personal data privacy, and how to prevent online fraud. The platform is open to anyone with access to a smartphone or computer, making it widely accessible across the country.
Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia, stated that the initiative reflects Nigeria’s intention to promote technological progress while protecting individual privacy rights.
“Our progress in data protection shows that a country that values privacy also lays the groundwork for genuine development,” Hadejia said.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), noted that the launch forms part of wider efforts to bolster digital governance throughout Africa. He encouraged increased collaboration among African nations in enforcing data protection regulations, enhancing expertise, and sharing insights.
“I am confident that the discussions and resolutions from this conference will contribute meaningfully to building a resilient and trustworthy digital future for the continent,” Olatunji said.
The conference, themed “Balancing Innovation in Africa: Data Protection and Privacy in Emerging Technologies,” convened stakeholders and experts from across Africa to address how to protect citizens’ rights amid rapid technological advancements.
