FG inaugurates 5-member panel to probe NCoS over Bobrisky alleged bribery saga
The Federal Government has formed a five-member independent investigative panel to scrutinise allegations of corruption and misconduct within the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), particularly concerning the treatment of convicted cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the panel’s inauguration in Abuja on Monday.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the urgency of the investigation, particularly regarding claims that certain correctional personnel had provided alternative accommodation for Bobrisky.
He emphasised the need for reform within the NCoS to enhance transparency and accountability.
“This committee is tasked with investigating specific allegations of corruption, torture, and mistreatment of inmates by correctional officers,” the Minister stated.
He expressed a firm expectation for the committee to deliver its findings within two weeks.
“I want to make it clear, nobody will be shielded. No matter how highly placed, no one is above the law.”
The committee will be chaired by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, and is composed of experienced professionals, including Omotese Eva, Nasir Usman, Dr. Uju Agomoh, and Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugo.
The Minister instructed the panel to adopt a comprehensive approach to investigate the allegations and propose both immediate and long-term solutions to systemic issues within the correctional system.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo further charged the committee to ensure that their findings are made public, reinforcing the government’s commitment to justice and integrity in the correctional service.
“We will rely on your legal guidance to ensure our actions align with the law of the land,” he added, emphasising the need for a fair and thorough investigation that upholds the rights of all parties involved.
The establishment of this panel comes in response to public outcry over the handling of the Bobrisky case and aims to restore public confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s correctional system.
