FG commences distribution of 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles to tackle unemployment

The Federal Government, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, has commenced the distribution of 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles.

The unveiling took place on October 1, 2024, at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.

Project Director of the P-CNG initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, emphasised the significance of this initiative in fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to reducing transportation costs, boosting economic prosperity, and promoting an environmentally friendly fuel alternative.

“I’m pleased to announce that we are here to deliver on Mr. President’s promise,” Oluwagbemi stated.

“These tricycles are not just here for use; they are wholly assembled in Nigeria in a factory in Shagamu.”

Highlighting the broader implications of this project, he noted that over 50 young individuals were recently trained in the assembly processes, with many more expected to follow.

“With this delivery, thousands of youths across our country will be employed not just in the operations of these tricycles, but also in maintenance and efficient deployment across Nigeria,” he added.

Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, praised the initiative for its potential to alleviate transportation challenges faced by citizens and transporters alike.

“These tricycles will go a long way in easing these transportation challenges,” she remarked.

She further discussed the critical role of the National Youth Investment Fund as a financial backbone to support young entrepreneurs in the transportation sector.

The Minister’s vision aligns with the P-CNGi’s ambitious goal of deploying a total of two million tricycles, which would significantly transform the landscape of transportation in Nigeria.
