FG announces establishment of new communications team for power sector

The Federal Government has launched the Power Sector Communications Team (PSCT) to improve transparency and communication within the power sector.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Power House in Abuja, led by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu. He stressed the significance of effective communication in tackling the sector’s challenges.

In a statement released on Wednesday, PSCT Chairman Bolaji Tunji outlined the initiative’s goals. Minister Adelabu described the PSCT as a “strategic effort to close the gap between the power sector and the public,” emphasizing the need for clear and consistent communication to build trust and confidence.

“The PSCT is more than just a team; it represents our commitment to superior communication,” Adelabu stated. “We envision a Nigeria where electricity is a basic right rather than a luxury, and effective communication is essential to achieving this goal.”

Adelabu highlighted that the PSCT will focus on simplifying technical issues, fostering stakeholder collaboration, and promoting a positive image of the power sector. He expressed confidence that the team, under its dedicated members, will drive significant transformation in the sector.

Chairman Bolaji Tunji expressed enthusiasm for the PSCT’s reactivation, noting its revival signals a renewed focus on addressing communication challenges. He emphasized that the team’s mission is to reshape the sector’s public perception through consistent, honest, and insightful information.

Tunji outlined strategic initiatives, including a nationwide campaign to educate the public on issues like energy theft and vandalism. He stressed the importance of stakeholder engagement through regular dialogues, workshops, and forums to enhance cooperation across the power sector.

“The goal is to equip citizens with the knowledge to protect our power infrastructure and inspire collective action against harmful practices,” Tunji said.

He also highlighted the need for adequate funding and the inclusion of the communication team in all relevant Ministry and agency activities, underscoring that clear, concise, and customer-focused communication is crucial for a public utility organization.

The PSCT’s launch is viewed as a significant move towards improving transparency and building public trust in Nigeria’s power sector. As the Minister concluded, “Together, we can forge a brighter, more electrified future for Nigeria.”
