FCTA disburses N300m scholarship to 16,224 indigent students

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has begun the distribution of N300 million in scholarships to 16,224 indigenous and underprivileged students enrolled in public schools.

The scholarship, designated for the 2023/2024 academic year, aims to support financially disadvantaged students in furthering their education.

Speaking at the disbursement event in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, acknowledged that while the initiative was commendable, it was merely a starting point.

He stressed that education serves as the foundation of national progress and assured that the FCTA remains committed to sustaining the scholarship scheme to enhance educational opportunities for underprivileged students.

Wike, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Chide Amadi, reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to prioritising the professional development of teachers and ensuring the continuous improvement of educational services in FCT public schools.

Amadi further stated that the minister had authorised the participation of FCT public schools in international science competitions, including the World Robotic Festival in Houston, Texas. Additionally, the administration has endorsed participation in other prestigious global science events.

“These accomplishments stand as a testament to the perseverance, diligence, and aptitude of the students, made possible through the enhanced teaching and learning conditions in FCT public schools. Furthermore, Wike has sanctioned comprehensive training and capacity-building initiatives for teachers across all levels, ensuring the continuous improvement of education standards in the FCT,” Amadi remarked.

Dr Danlami Hayyo, the Mandate Secretary of the Education Secretariat, commended Minister Wike for his unwavering dedication to enhancing access to quality education across the territory.

He noted that, under Wike’s leadership, the FCTA had allocated over N230 billion to the development of educational infrastructure, including the renovation and construction of new schools.

In her remarks, the Director of the FCT Scholarship Board, Mrs Hannah David, revealed that the board had provided scholarships to 146,000 indigenous and underprivileged students in the FCT since its inception.

She stated that the scholarships cover a broad spectrum of students, including those in primary and secondary schools, special needs centres, the Nigerian Law School, and foreign tertiary institutions.

“These scholarships cater to all categories of students, including those with special needs, who receive wheelchairs and other essential learning materials,” David explained.

While expressing appreciation to Wike for his unwavering support, David urged other stakeholders to contribute towards achieving the board’s mission, emphasising that the responsibility of providing education should not rest solely on the government.

The FCTA’s investment in education, according to Hayyo, reflects a strategic approach to equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to compete on a global scale and drive sustainable development in the region.
