FCT Police appeal to residents to shun Aug 1 protest

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, has urged residents and indigenes not to participate in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, which was organised in response to the current economic hardships facing the country.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, CP Igweh made a fervent appeal for the public to avoid the protest, expressing concerns that it could threaten the security efforts that have been made in the FCT.
Igweh stated, “I specifically want to appeal to the residents and indigenes of the FCT, as well as everyone living here. Please, do not engage in this protest. Think of it like this: lions do not destroy their own dens. You would never see a lion destroy its den. I urge you not to join this protest because we have worked tirelessly to ensure your safety.”
He continued, “We have been battling criminals not just in Abuja, but also in Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Niger to secure your environment.
“Tragically, I have lost colleagues in the line of duty; just last week, two of my men were killed in Gidango, and two more lost their lives shortly thereafter. Let our sacrifices be a testament to our commitment to your safety. I implore you to avoid the protest.”
Igweh further explained that the government has been making significant efforts to improve public infrastructure, including the maintenance of roads throughout the FCT.
“If you observe, there have been notable improvements in the FCT’s roads, whether it’s from the Minister of FCT or the President. Look around from Wuse to other areas, and even in the outskirts, there are visible changes. This is evidence of the government’s efforts.”
He emphasised that participation in the protest could invite disruptions from miscreants aiming to undermine the progress that has been made. “We are working hard to maintain the improvements and prevent a regression to past conditions. I beg you, do not take part in this protest.”
CP Igweh concluded by urging the residents to support the ongoing security efforts and appreciate the sacrifices made by the police.
“Let us all contribute to keeping the FCT safe.
“Allow those who wish to protest to do so elsewhere. Let us act with maturity and gratitude for the safety measures in place. Our losses have been for your benefit; use this to show your appreciation. If you do, we will continue our efforts to secure this city. God bless you all.”
