FCMB’s training programme transforming our businesses – Entrepreneurs

Dozens of entrepreneurs across Nigeria’s southwest are attributing new-found confidence and business growth strategies to a recent training initiative organised by First City Monument Bank (FCMB).

The programme, Business Empowerment, Sustainability and Training (BEST) Masterclass, wrapped up its latest round in March 2025, offering hands-on training to business owners in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Kwara States.

Held between 12 and 21 March, the sessions covered essential areas including financial management, digital marketing, business planning, and strategies for sustainable growth. As an added benefit, some participants received free business registration through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), facilitated by FCMB.

For many attendees, the experience delivered more than anticipated.

Jide Olaniyi, a small business owner from Kwara State, admitted he had little expectation going in. “But I left with a deeper understanding of how to structure my business and apply digital tools. I’m already seeing the difference in how I operate,” he said.

In Ogun State, Patricia Simisola spoke of the practical benefits she gained. “I learnt valuable business skills, and the free business registration was a real bonus. It gave me the push I needed to formalise my business,” she said.

Beyond the curriculum, participants praised the peer learning opportunities the programme fostered. Dolapo Olayiwola, who joined the Oyo State session, said the training reshaped her outlook. “It changed how I approach decision-making in my business. I now have a clearer idea of how to grow without losing focus,” she shared.

George Ogbonnaya, FCMB’s Divisional Head of Business Banking, said the initiative is part of the bank’s broader strategy to promote inclusive economic development.

“Our aim isn’t limited to providing financial support. We’re committed to equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools they need to build scalable, resilient businesses,” he said.

Launched in 2018, the BEST programme has trained hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs across Nigeria. FCMB has plans to scale the initiative further, aiming to reach more business owners and offer support that goes beyond access to capital—encompassing education, mentorship, and business infrastructure.

One of those already seeing results is Ifeoma Ozoemena, who took part in the Ondo State session. “I now feel more confident about growing my business,” she said. “I’m glad I gave it a chance.”

The Masterclass sessions were built around actionable, practical insights. Participants explored a range of critical topics: financial literacy, digital marketing, financial planning, marketing strategies, operational efficiency, sustainability, and strategic thinking.

Workshops and networking opportunities were led by industry experts and successful entrepreneurs, encouraging attendees to craft growth plans rooted in proven business principles.
