Fashion designer remanded for unlawful society membership, attempted culpable homicide

Lawal has been ordered to be remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre on charges of belonging to an unlawful society and attempted culpable homicide.

The order was given by Mrs. Cynthia Ikpe of the Makurdi Magistrates’ Court, who stated that Lawal should remain at the centre until further investigations are conducted.

The case has been adjourned to September 25 for further mention.  The case was reported by Yusuf Isah, a resident of Benue Crescent in Wadata, Makurdi, who stated that a group of young men armed with locally made guns and pistols bearing the emblem of the Black Skull Confraternity had attacked Wadata.

The complainant alleged that the assailants began shooting indiscriminately, resulting in the injury of Rabiu Isah, Umar Musa, and several others who were trying to flee for safety.

The police investigation led to the arrest of Lawal, while his accomplices are still at large.

The complainant alleged that they began to shoot sporadically, and in the process hit one Rabiu Isah and his friend, Umar Musa, while some other persons sustained various degrees of injuries while scampering for safety.

Friday said during Police investigation, the defendant was arrested, while his accomplices were still at large.

He said investigation into the matter was still ongoing, and therefore, requested an adjournment.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 97 and 230 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004, Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act 2004 and 1(2) of the Abduction, Hostage taking, kidnapping, Secret cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law 2017.
