Farmers cry for help as quella birds invade rice farms in Jigawa

Farmers in Jigawa State have cried out for help over the recent invasion of quella birds into their farms.

There are reports that quella birds invaded most rice farms in the state, destroying farm produce.

Some of the rice farmers told Newsmen that the invasion of the quella birds has threatened farm yield.

Malam Musa, a farmer in Auyo local government area of the state said three of his farms were destroyed by the quella birds invasion.

“I was anticipating getting at least 70 bags of rice after the harvest but due to the bird’s invasion I only managed to get 50 bags”

Idris Kamilu a rice farmer in Auyo local government said farmers have to adopt the traditional means to minimize the bird’s attack.

“We are using local fish-catching nets to minimize the bird’s attack which normally occurs early in the morning”

They, however, urged the Federal and Jigawa State government to as a matter of urgency fumigate farms in Auyo local government area and other local governments across the state.

The Federated water users association, Hadejia valley irrigation scheme Auyo local govt chapter also appealed to government to urgently fumigate the rice farms
